Clarity or sharpness of OCULAR VISION or the ability of the eye to see fine details. Visual acuity depends on the functions of RETINA, neuronal transmission, and the interpretative ability of the brain. Normal visual acuity is expressed as 20/20 indicating that one can see at 20 feet what should normally be seen at that distance. Visual acuity can also be influenced by brightness, color, and contrast.

This may be due to increased anterior high-order aberrations that persist after endothelial keratoplasty. It is not clear at what stage these aberrations begin. We aimed to evaluate how subclinical corneal edema affects anterior corneal high-order aberrations. PURPOSE: We aimed to evaluate anterior corneal high-order aberrations according to the presence of subclinical corneal edema in Fuchs’ endothelial corneal dystrophy using Scheimpflug topography. METHODS: All the patients underwent corneal topography (Sirius Scheimpflug-Placido disc camera; CSO Ophthalmic, Scandicci, Italy). Fifty-two eyes of 31 patients with Fuchs’ endothelial corneal dystrophy and 52 eyes of 35 patients without corneal problems were included. In addition, patients with Fuchs’ endothelial corneal dystrophy were divided into two groups according to subclinical corneal edema as with Fuchs’ endothelial corneal dystrophy-edema and Fuchs’ endothelial corneal dystrophy-nonedema. Subclinical corneal edema was defined based on the presence of at least two of three findings of the loss of regular isopachs, displacement of the thinnest point of the cornea, and posterior depression. High-order aberrations were expressed as Zernike polynomials in the 4- and 6-mm optical zone. RESULTS: We found that subclinical corneal edema in Fuchs’ endothelial corneal dystrophy caused a larger 4-mm trefoil II and a smaller 6-mm spherical aberration II measurements than the nonedema group. The 6-mm total high-order aberrations, 6-mm coma aberration, and 4- and 6-mm trefoil II aberration measurements were larger, and the 6-mm spherical aberration II was smaller in Fuchs’ endothelial corneal dystrophy patients with edema compared with the healthy eyes. CONCLUSIONS: The presence of subclinical corneal edema in Fuchs’ endothelial corneal dystrophy results in larger 4-mm trefoil II and smaller 6-mm spherical aberration II measurements. [Thésaurus HELB]:Optique:lecture rapideMots-clés : International Reading Speed Texts (IReST) Résumé : SIGNIFICANCE: This article evaluates the standardized Greek version of the International Reading Speed Texts (IReST) set, which enriches interlanguage comparisons and international clinical studies of reading performance. Moreover, it investigates how specific textual and subject-related characteristics modulate the variability of reading speed across texts and readers. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to develop a standardized Greek version of the IReST set and investigate how specific textual and subject-related factors modulate the variability of reading speed across texts and readers. METHODS: The English IReST texts were translated to Greek and matched for length, content, and linguistic difficulty. The Greek IReSTs were presented at a distance of 40 cm and size of 1 M to assess reading speeds of 25 normally sighted native speakers (age range, 18 to 35 years). The participants read the texts aloud while reading time was measured by stopwatch. Reading performance included measurement of reading speed in three units of analysis. Reading efficiency was assessed using a word-level oral reading task. Statistical analysis included evaluation of subject- and text-related variability, as well as correlations between reading speed and specific textual and subject-related factors. RESULTS: The average reading speed between texts was 208 ± 24 words/min, 450 ± 24 syllables/min, and 1049 ± 105 characters/min. Differences between readers accounted for the 76.6%, whereas differences across texts accounted for the 23.4% of the total variability of reading speed. Word length (in syllables per word) and median word frequency showed a statistically significant contribution to the variability of reading speed (r = 0.95 and 0.70, respectively). Reading speed was also statistically correlated with word reading efficiency (r = 0.68). [Thésaurus HELB]:Optique:basse visionRésumé : SIGNIFICANCE: We assessed the number of referrals for low vision (LV) services to determine if establishing an LV program at a large academic medical center impacted referral rates. Visual acuity (VA), referral outcome, location, and specialty were examined as factors that could impact referrals. PURPOSE: This study aimed to identify gaps in the referral process to LV services. METHODS: Electronic medical records of patients were reviewed to ascertain the referral rate among those who qualified for services, both before (2014 to 2016) and after (2017 to 2019) the establishment of an LV program. The medical records were further subdivided into two categories based on VA in the better-seeing eye: 20/70 to 20/ 200 and 20/200 to worse vision. RESULTS: A total of 2014 patient records with VA qualifying for LV services were reviewed. The proportion of patients who had a VA of 20/70 to 20/200 inclusive in their better eye was 91.7%. A majority (89.8%) of patients with VA of 20/70 to 20/200 and 74.4% of patients with VA worse than 20/200 were never referred. Before establishing an LV program, only 2.2% of patients with VA of 20/70 to 20/200 were referred for services on their first visit, which improved to 8% after the program was established (odds ratio [OR], 3.88; 95% confidence interval [CI], 2.37 to 6.33; P < .001). Also, before the program's establishment, 12.5% of patients with VA worse than 20/ 200 were referred on their first visit, which increased to 31.9% after the program's establishment (OR, 3.29; 95% CI, 1.50 to 7.19; P = .002). Patients with VA worse than 20/200 were more likely to be referred (before: OR, 6.34 [95% CI, 3.03 to 13.28; P < .001]; after: OR, 5.38 [95% CI, 3.09 to 9.37; P < .001]). Our data also showed that 10.3% of patients in this study declined referral to LV services. CONCLUSIONS: Referral rates to LV services are low among patients who qualify. The establishment of an LV program at the medical center significantly increased referral rates. However, more improvement is necessary to connect patients to LV services.
