Corneal and conjunctival dryness due to deficient tear production, predominantly in menopausal and post-menopausal women. Filamentary keratitis or erosion of the conjunctival and corneal epithelium may be caused by these disorders. Sensation of the presence of a foreign body in the eye and burning of the eyes may occur.

[Thésaurus HELB]:Optique:port de lentilles de contactRésumé : SIGNIFICANCE: Tear osmolarity has been reported as one of the best diagnostic tests for dry eye disease and its management. Contact lens wear is thought to influence tear homeostasis. Understanding how regular wear of contact lenses and their type affect tear osmolarity is important. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to assess changes in tear osmolarity and ocular symptoms over a period of 12 months following refitting contact lens wearers with daily disposable contact lenses. METHODS: Fifty subjects aged (mean ± SD) 26 ± 4 years were refitted with either silicone-hydrogel (delefilcon A, SiHy, n = 34) or hydrogel (omafilcon A, Hy, n = 16) daily disposable soft contact lenses. Study included seven visits: baseline measurements without contact lenses; two visits for contact lens fit and selection; follow-up measurements after 3, 6, and 12 months of contact lens wear; and a post-study visit without contact lenses. Lens type selection was based on a set of objective measurements. Subjects were instructed to follow strict wearing rules. Impedance-based osmometer was used to collect samples from the lower tear meniscuses. The Ocular Surface Disease Index (OSDI) and the eight-item Contact Lens Dry Eye Questionnaire were used to assess subject-reported ocular symptoms and contact lens discomfort, respectively. RESULTS: Downward trend of tear osmolarity was noted over the time course of study. Statistically significant differences were noted in tear osmolarity (Friedman test, χ2 = 21.91 [P < .001], and χ2 = 13.89 [P = .003]) for the right and left eyes, respectively. noninvasive, practical, and easy-to-use tool.
PURPOSE: This study aimed to assess the tear film in smokers, those with a high body mass index (BMI), and
healthy subjects using the EASYTEAR view+.
METHODS: Thirty men with a high BMI (>25 kg/m2
; 24.4 ± 6.4 years), 30 smokers (25.1 ± 6.1 years), and 30
healthy subjects (22.2 ± 3.5 years) were recruited. Each subject completed the Ocular Surface Disease Index, followed
by the assessment of noninvasive tear breakup time, tear meniscus height (TMH), and lipid layer patterns (LLPs).
RESULTS: Significant differences were found in the median TMH scores between smokers and healthy subjects
(P = .03) and between subjects with a high BMI and the healthy ones (P = .04). The median LLP score was significantly
(P < .001) higher in normal subjects (4.0 [1.0]) than in smokers (2.4 [1.0]) and subjects with high BMI (2.0 [1.3]). For
subjects with a high BMI, the noninvasive tear breakup time score was strongly correlated (Spearman rank correlation coefficient; r) with TMH (r = 0.552, P = .002) and LLP (r = 0.555, P = .001). The LLP showed that grade B (lipid layer thickness, 30 to 50 nm; more compact) was common in subjects with a high BMI, grade C (50 to 80 nm, gray waves) was predominant in smokers, and grade D (~80 nm, dense white-blue layer) represented the majority of normal eye subjects.
CONCLUSIONS: Smokers and individuals with a high BMI showed significantly lower lipid layer grades and tear meniscus height scores compared with the control group. The assessment of tear film parameters using the EASYTEAR

An association between dyslipidemia and meibomian gland dysfunction has been proposed, but this has not been estimated. Therefore, this study evaluates the odds of dyslipidemia in meibomian gland dysfunction. PURPOSE: This study aimed to use meta-analysis to estimate the association between dyslipidemia and meibomian gland dysfunction. METHODS: The following databases were searched: PubMed, Google Scholar, and Scopus. Case-control and cohort studies assessing the association between dyslipidemia and meibomian gland dysfunction were included. The association was assessed using odds ratios. Heterogeneity between studies was assessed with the χ2 statistic and degree of inconsistency. The quality of studies was assessed using the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale. The systematic review was registered on PROSPERO (ID: CRD42022347982). RESULTS: The systematic review included three case-control and two cohort studies. The odds of hypercholesterolemia and hypertriglyceridemia in meibomian gland dysfunction were 5.45 (95% confidence interval [CI], 1.65 to 17.95) and 3.28 (95% CI, 1.25 to 8.62), respectively. The odds of elevated serum low-density lipoprotein and reduced high-density lipoprotein in meibomian gland dysfunctionwere 2.72 (95% CI, 1.24 to 5.98) and 1.15 (95% CI, 0.74 to 1.79), respectively. The current study's limitation is that the effects of sex, age, and meibomian gland dysfunction severity on the association between dyslipidemia and meibomian gland dysfunction were not assessed. CONCLUSIONS: The current study suggests a significant association between dyslipidemia and meibomian gland dysfunction. This finding suggests that meibomian gland dysfunction diagnosis may call for dyslipidemia screening.
