[Thésaurus HELB]:Optique:revêtement polymèreRésumé : SIGNIFICANCE: The findings of this study indicate that patients could simultaneously be offered the individualized optical correction of wavefront-guided (WFG) lenses and the superior comfort afforded by polymer coatings. This could be helpful to patients with ectasia suffering ocular dryness or dependent on scleral lenses for lengthy periods of wear. PURPOSE: Wavefront-guided scleral lenses target lower- and higher-order aberrations of individual eyes using submicrometer-level contours in the anterior lens surface. Hydrophilic polyethylene glycol (PEG) polymer coatings applied to lens surfaces improve comfort and wettability. This study aimed to quantify aberration changes (e.g., masking) when applying polymer coatings to WFG and conventional scleral lenses. METHODS: Two control lenses (remained uncoated) and 14 experimental lenses (two repeated builds of seven aberration designs: one spherical, two coma, four full WFG [second- to fifth-order aberrations]) were manufactured, and aberrations were measured (mean of three) by two operators before and after coating. Root mean square (RMS) and visual image quality (logVSX) differences were calculated for 6-mm diameters. RESULTS: Median RMS aberration change due to coating was 0.012 μm (range, 0.008 to 0.057 μm). Maximum logVSX change due to coating was 0.073, predicting an approximately one letter change in acuity. Instrument sensitivity was 0.002 μm. [Thésaurus HELB]:Optique:port de lentilles de contactMots-clés : 2-Methacryloyloxyethyl phosphorylcholine Résumé : SIGNIFICANCE: Contact lens (CL) wearing may cause discomfort and eye dryness. We describe here the efficacy of
a synthetic polymer in protecting both the corneal epithelial cells and the CL from desiccation damage. Artificial
tears containing this polymer might be helpful to treat or prevent ocular surface damage in CL wearers.
PURPOSE: We aimed to investigate the protective effects of the synthetic polymer 2-methacryloyloxyethyl
phosphorylcholine (poly-MPC) on corneal epithelial cells and CLs subjected to desiccation damage.
METHODS: The interaction of poly-MPC with the cell membrane was evaluated on human primary corneal epithelial cells (HCE-F) by the sodium dodecyl sulfate damage protection assay or the displacement of the cell-binding
lectin concanavalin A (ConA). Survival in vitro of HCE-F cells and ex vivo of porcine corneas exposed to desiccating
conditions after pre-treatment with poly-MPC or hyaluronic acid (HA), hypromellose (HPMC), and trehalose was
evaluated by a colorimetric assay. Soft CLs were soaked overnight in a solution of poly-MPC/HPMC and then let
dry in ambient air. Contact lens weight, morphology, and transparency were periodically registered until complete
dryness.
RESULTS: Polymer 2-methacryloyloxyethyl phosphorylcholine and HPMC were retained on the HCE-F cell membrane more than trehalose or HA. Polymer 2-methacryloyloxyethyl phosphorylcholine, HA, and HPMC either alone
or in association protected corneal cells from desiccation significantly better than did trehalose alone or in association with HA. Contact lens permeation by poly-MPC/HPMC preserved better their shape and transparency than did
saline.
CONCLUSIONS: Polymer 2-methacryloyloxyethyl phosphorylcholine coats and protects corneal epithelial cells and
CLs from desiccation damage more efficiently compared with trehalose and as good as other reference compounds.Permalink : https://bibliotheque.helb-prigogine.be/opac_css/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id= [article]Exemplaires

[Thésaurus Mesh]Étude comparative
[Thésaurus Mesh]Gouttes oculaires lubrifiantes
[Thésaurus Mesh]ViscositéRésumé : SIGNIFICANCE: Rheological patterns were objectively calculated considering the first and last viscosity, besides the difference of viscosity with a specific shear rate. Shear thinning, shear thickening, thixotropic, and Newtonian behavior patterns were found.
PURPOSE: This study aimed to describe, in an objective way, the heological behavior of several artificial tears.
METHODS: Seventy-eight artificial tears were included in this experimental analytical study. Its viscous behavior was measured using a cone-plate rheometer. An ascending and descending measurement range was defined for the shear rate from 1 to 1000 s−1 and vice versa. Hysteresis was alculated with the initial and final difference of viscosity. The rheological behavior pattern was calculated as the viscosity difference for the shear rate between 100 and 1000 s−1 .
RESULTS: Four rheological patterns with different magnitudes were found: shear thinning, shear thickening, thixotropic, and Newtonian.
CONCLUSIONS: The viscosity of artificial tears always depends on the shear rate. It is possible to find two patterns simultaneously depending on the shear rate. These rheological patterns could serve to optimize the treatment with lubricants for different conditions of the ocular surface. In vivo studies are necessary to evaluate the clinical significance of these findings.Note de contenu :
