Everyone has a preferred method. Just last November, Boffeli and colleagues published an algorithm in Podiatry Today on determining what procedure to do for cartilage lesions/cysts of the talus.1 The algorithm was well thought out and logical, but do we really need so many options? Should every surgeon be capable of performing every procedure? Boffeli and colleagues focused on older patients but our focus is the athlete and soldier, and once you start talking about athletes, discussions start to get heated and often unscientific. [Thésaurus Mesh]Vision oculaireMots-clés : arbitre Résumé : SIGNIFICANCE: The decisions taken by soccer officials are critically important to game management. Understanding the underlying processes that mediate expert performance in soccer refereeing may lead to a better standard of officiating. Vision is the dominant source of incoming information upon which officials rely to make their on-field decisions. PURPOSE: We tested the hypothesis that performance on generic tests of vision and visual perception predicts domain-specific performance in elite-level soccer referees (R) and assistant referees (AR). METHODS: We assessed the vision of R and AR who officiate at the highest level in Portugal. To be eligible for inclusion, R and AR had to have officiated for at least two consecutive seasons across the 2014/2015, 2015/2016, and 2016/2017 seasons. A single, rank-order list of the performance of eligible officials was created based on the rank-order list for each season that was made by the Portuguese Soccer Federation. Clinical vision measures included visual acuity and stereoacuity, and visual perception measures were gathered using the Test of Visual Perceptual Skills, Third Edition. RESULTS: A total of 59 officials participated (21 R, 38 AR), 17 of whom officiated at the international level. The R and AR groups did not differ in vision or visual perception measures. We found that better stereoacuity (P < .001) and visual memory (P = .001) are associated with a higher rank order of on-field performance after adjusting for the age, experience, the national/international status, and the regional affiliation of the officials. Together, these two measures explain 22% of the variance in rank-order performance. CONCLUSIONS: This is the first study to show a link between the vision of officials and their on-field performance. The origin and significance of these findings remain to be established, and further work is required to establish whether they are component skills in the domain of soccer refereeing. [Thésaurus Mesh]Vision oculaireRésumé : SIGNIFICANCE: Athletes exhibit better dynamic visual acuity (DVA) compared with nonathletes, whereas action
video game players (VGPs) perform more similarly to controls despite having similar static visual acuity and refractive errors. The differences in DVA between groups were not related to differences in static visual acuity, refractive
error, or smooth pursuit gain.
PURPOSE: The purpose of the study was to examine whether athletes and VGPs have superior DVA than controls
(nonathletes, nongamers).
METHODS: Forty-six participants (15 athletes, 11 VGPs, 20 controls) aged 21.7 years (standard deviation,
2.8 years) were recruited. Participants were emmetropic with equivalent monocular and binocular static visual
acuity between groups. Dynamic visual acuity was assessed using predictable (horizontal) and unpredictable (random) motion targets at velocities of 5, 10, 20, and 30°/s. Smooth pursuit eye movements were assessed using a
horizontal motion step-ramp stimulus at the same speeds. This study was pre-registered with the Center for Open
Science (https://osf.io/eu7qc).
RESULTS: At 30°/s, there were significant main effects of group (F = 4.762, P = .01) and motion type (F = 9.538,
P = .004). Tukey post hoc analysis for groups indicated that athletes performed better than did the control group
(t = −2.919, P < .02). An omnibus (group motion type speed) repeated measures ANOVA showed a main effect of speed (F = 110.137, P < .001) and a speed motion-type interaction (F = 27.825, P < .001). Dynamic
visual acuity decreased as speed increased, and the slope of the change was greater for random than for horizontal
motion. Smooth pursuit gains were not significantly different between groups (P > .05).
CONCLUSIONS: Athletes have superior dynamic visual acuity performance compared with controls at 30°/s. This
between-group difference cannot be fully explained by differences in smooth pursuit eye movements and therefore
may reflect other differences between the groups.Permalink : https://bibliotheque.helb-prigogine.be/opac_css/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id= [article]Exemplaires
